Hi John,

The clamp tube was a running change and was added in later production. It can be added to yours if desired.

During handling it is very easy for tubes, crystals, and any other socketed components to pop loose during shipping. My preferred method for shipping gear is to remove all tubes, crystals, etc. and wrap them because not only can they get damaged when they are loose they can easily turn into shrapnel damaging other parts as they fly around. Many times meters have been damaged, variable capacitors plates bent, and coils have been damaged by loose parts flying around during shipping.

I always ask sellers to remove tubes and wrap them, turn variable capacitors so that they are fully meshed, and place bubble wrap, wadded newspaper, or other material inside that will hopefully prevent loose hardware or other projectiles from doing further damage during shipping.

When you replace the 5R4 rectifier tubes make sure the tube socket faces are cleaned of any dirt/debris and do the same for the replacement 5R4 tube bases. These tubes and sockets are very prone to developing carbon tracks on the socket and I had to replace one in my Viking 1 because it was etched into the socket.

Put a couple of drops of oil on the shaft of the 160 in/out switch because the pulley that drives it will shear at the shaft connection if this switch freezes.

Subject: [Johnson] New member starting on a Viking II

Hi to all:
This is John Saxon, K5ENQ, in Pearland, TX. Just received a very nice Viking II, and starting to check it out (a VFO 122 and Matchbox are also on the way). I am feeling very lucky as this V-II seems to be in very good condition. I hope I don't abuse my welcome in the weeks to come as I run into issues.
1. My serial # is 5054. Can we tell if that is an early model from the serial #?
2. Something weird. I read on another forum of a ham who received a Viking II in the mail and the 3 rectifier tubes had come out of their sockets and had broken. I had the same thing happen to mine.
3. I prepared tube labels to go under the chassis next to the tube sockets and discovered my V-II has 1 fewer tube than the manual I downloaded from BAMA. The schematic shows a 6AQ5 which at first glance of the schematic appears to be a clamp tube for the 6146s. My V-II does not have that tube. The manual has 13 tubes in the parts list, my V-II has 12 tubes. The spot for the 6AQ5 and R30 pot are just blank chassis on mine. Could it be that the clamp tube was added on later models? Could it be I have a very early model?
Thank you very much. Isn't it great to be able to consult a group of genuine experts on these issues? :-)
