Thanks Rodger, Terry & Richard, good info.  I didn't mention ... this is my first Johnson, been wanting one for a while.  I have ordered ER #110, 111 and 112 as someone suggested.  They have a 3 part article on working on the Viking.
I will search to see if it is possible to get a manual, or at least a schematic, of my model without the clamp tube.
I'll keep on checking caps and resistors and when the ER mags show up, perhaps I will get some info on the clamp tube.
Thanks!JohnK5ENQ

Hi John,

The clamp tube was a running change and was added in later production.  It can be added to yours if desired.

During handling it is very easy for tubes, crystals, and any other socketed components to pop loose during shipping.  My preferred method for shipping gear is to remove all tubes, crystals, etc. and wrap them because not only can they get damaged when they are loose they can easily turn into shrapnel damaging other parts as they fly around.  Many times meters have been damaged, variable capacitors plates bent, and coils have been damaged by loose parts flying around during shipping.

I always ask sellers to remove tubes and wrap them, turn variable capacitors so that they are fully meshed, and place bubble wrap, wadded newspaper, or other material inside that will hopefully prevent loose hardware or other projectiles from doing further damage during shipping.

When you replace the 5R4 rectifier tubes make sure the tube socket faces are cleaned of any dirt/debris and do the same for the replacement 5R4 tube bases.  These tubes and sockets are very prone to developing carbon tracks on the socket and I had to replace one in my Viking 1 because it was etched into the socket.

Put a couple of drops of oil on the shaft of the 160 in/out switch because the pulley that drives it will shear at the shaft connection if this switch freezes.
