For info of all: Richard Morris answered my query off list and, did
confirm he is a legit ham (KB7FDF, near Kearny, AZ). With that detail
out of the way, Richard Knoppow and/or others can hopefully proceed to
provide this young man some help in figuring out his old Johnson beast.
I sold my Valiant about 8 years ago, but I do recall mine did not have a
sidetone function, tuning was done using a carrier zero beat process,
feeding the Valiant's VFO to an R-390A.

For Richard KB7FDF: Richard, you should reply to the list
(johnson at mailman.qth.net), not to individuals, when you need general
help. That way everyone will see the info and can maybe chime in to
assist. Good luck and welcome! This is a great list and these guys will
help you any way they can.
