Hello Jerry & All.
Jerry I want to thank you for your reply and letting me know to reply to this way to the johnsonmailman.qth.net..
I don't know much about the Valiant & as I called it A SPOT Tone for the Zero Beat which I have done many times with a Hallicrafters HT-32A & The SX-101 Receiver but the HT-32A went out on me so I picked up the Johnson Valiant to pair up with the SX-101 receiver but I will say that when I first got the Johnson it had a zero tone in it as I used it just as I did on the 32A but then it went out and I did read on one of the post on the net that to check the tubes for that so I did check all the tubes in it & found 2 really week ones so I replace them BUT when I went to tune it up it was way off in Freq like the Dial would read 7.200 but it was transmitting on 7.300 so I wrote the man I got it from about it and he said that when you change anything in this transmitter it will change things & you will have to re-do the VFO so I went by the manual & got it back on track on all the bands so while I have it apart I thought I would try & get some help with the missing tone but you all are saying it did not have one & all I can say is there a way someone could have added a spot tone to it in the past? For me the transmitter looks stock .. Also For me I have no problem zero beating it by the carrier it puts out.. I am running a Inverted L 30 ft going up & 90 ft going out from there I have 14 ground wires of different lengths at the base of the L with a 9 to 1 being feed with LMR-400 to the Ameritron ATR-20 tuner 60 feet to the shack and I have no problems running my Yaesu 857D and my ALS-500 amp from 6 meters to 160 meters with 100 watts to 500 watts so that is the set up I am using with the Valiant..
So I will just leave the spot tone thing go & zero Beat with the carrier tell I can talk to Tom NE7X who you might want to look up on QRZ as his set up he built is something to see but he is out of town for 2 weeks..
QUESTION
Tonight I was talking to another Ham I know on 15 meters AM and in the back of the Valiant by the 3- 6146s there is a stack of coils and at one point I saw spark or something that cought my eye and when I looked one of the 6146 was glowing a nice blue color like a flame on a gas stove so I right then stoped transmitting and so I am thinking that even if I did re-do the VFO I did not check the Bias & so when I am done here I will check that & then see if that took care of things as nothing smoked or burnt and I let the rig run now for over an Hr and all is ok so any thought as to if I am going the right way on this..??
I know I have a lot to learn and no one knows the Hrs I spend reading to try and learn what I need to know and I will never get it all the way but I am out to get what I can so I can enjoy this Hobby that I spend so much time with & Loving it and I can not tell anyone not even me Girlfriend of 15 years why I Just Dig these old radios that I really can't work on & why I do as I do but all I can say is I have a Drive bigger than all you out there reading this to LEARN just enough to keep me and my Old Radios above water so we don't drown Hi Hi. What I would like to know a man would have to go to school for some time and I am like other Hams who at the time just did the questions & answers to get the Ticket & learned nothing & Now I want to learn what I should have been doing but I am not all that dumb as I have learned a lot over the years..
Well I have said a mouth full but I do hope to pick up a lot of help from this group or I would have not spent the time to find it..
Jerry Thanks Again
73 to all
Richard
