Carl,

I have been using the red Mobil 1 synthetic grease (same stuff I use for my pickup and tractor) for many years in the Johnson reduction drives and it seems to work fine.  For a high torque application you would probably need a special grease.  I imagine the original Johnson stuff is just run of the mill petroleum based.
