I use the same tub of Wolfs Head wheel bearing grease I bought maybe 40
years ago for repacking most ball and needle bearings. Exceptions were in
high performance automotive transmissions.

Carl,
I have been using the red Mobil 1 synthetic grease (same stuff I use for my
pickup and tractor) for many years in the Johnson reduction drives and it
seems to work fine. For a high torque application you would probably need a
special grease. I imagine the original Johnson stuff is just run of the
mill petroleum based.
