I did the identical repair several years ago as well and can vouch for its effectiveness. I believe that I used .030 G-10 material and #2-56 screws/nuts. It was indeed a more elegant solution than using epoxy or rtv to mend the broken micarta. It's still in one of my Johnson rigs, I think the Pacemaker.
