Or you can inject a known amount of current from a low voltage source  
into the cathode (all transmitter power off) and see if the meter  
reads correctly.

The meter shunts in the Valiant are short bits of bare metal wire, and  
can be both hard to find, and mistaken for jumper wires.  The Range  
may be similar.
