In Electronic Technician's "A" school, we learned the
hard way if we didn't follow the correct methodology
of finding a problem. It is also called "Easter
Egging." That technique would not only fail you on a
practical test but enough "eggs in a basket" would get
you sent out to the fleet to be a boatswain's mate
chipping paint! 

The bottom line is that they were trying to teach you
to use your head and logically track the problem down.
