Tighten EVERY machine screw and nut that goes through
the chassis (including any sub chassis).  All of the
grounds in the unit are made through these connectors.
 If your Valiant uses rivits then you are going to
have to do something to tighten all of them which will
be difficult.

I have found that, on average, about 95% of the
"strange" problems in boat anchor equipment can be
"fixed" by getting all of the ground connections
tightened.
