I agree that a serial number might not work well in IQP. I don't want to re-flame things, but the 5NN report seem so useless, at least to me. But I am used to grid squares on VHF, so I may simply be failing to comprehend the relevance of HF operating practices that reply 99% of the time with 5NN.
Using QTH or county of location on both sides of the QSO would at least provide information that is useful and relevant. In every year I have run IQP, several people have volunteered their county information as well as the rest of their exchange. So, I doubt if it would take much effort to use QTH / county and state on both sides of the QSO.
