[ILQSO] ILQSO Digest, Vol 51, Issue 9

I think (I have lost track) it was K9IUA who mentioned the "useless"
signal report as an "attention-getter" or "place-holder". I can go with
that. If someone sends me something other than 59/599, my brain sort of
seizes up, but that's their prerogative. Most logging programs enter
59/599 by default; in some of them, I don't think you can even change
it!
I have NO problem with anyone sending me a "real" signal report; and if
anyone asks for one, I'll provide it. I don't know of any contest where
the signal reports are checked for accuracy, so count on me not
modifying the lot from 599 to 469 on the fly.
As for county info from both in and out state participants, it's OK to
send it; HOWEVER (!!!!) if you work WB2XXX and he gives you Monroe
County NY in ILQP, you had better log "NY", not "Monroe". At this
point, a county name assumes it's an Illinois contact. In addition,
some casual participants from out of state simply do not KNOW what
county they are in! (Mobiles especially). Checking this information in
logs adds another layer to the process (speaking as a log-checker)....
If one really wants to exchange county info between states, the MARAC
contest coming up in a couple of weeks is a terrific opportunity to do
so!!!
My rapidly-diminishing-two-cents-worth from Tampa this afternoon....

I agree that a serial number might not work well in IQP. I don't want to
re-flame things, but the 5NN report seem so useless, at least to me.
But I am used to grid squares on VHF, so I may simply be failing to
comprehend the relevance of HF operating practices that reply 99% of the
time with 5NN.
Using QTH or county of location on both sides of the QSO would at least
provide information that is useful and relevant. In every year I have
run IQP, several people have volunteered their county information as
well as the rest of their exchange. So, I doubt if it would take much
effort to use QTH / county and state on both sides of the QSO.
