Just to add to the previous replies...

Since my mobile operations usually consist of sitting at a county 
border for only 30~60 minutes, I never felt the need to inform the 
local or state police ahead of time. But if you will be at one spot for 
the whole contest, it might be advisable to do so. Posting a sign as 
N9GZ mentioned sounds like a good idea too.

Sometimes a passing vehicle would stop to ask if I needed help, which I 
didn't mind at all. Only last year, for the first time, was I ever 
approached by a landowner who objected to my presence by the roadside. 
But after some polite explanations he seemed satisified, if a bit 
puzzled.
