Dear Cook County ARES Members and Friends:
Please join us tonight, Wednesday, 24 August 2005,
at 9:00 PM, for the monthly Cook County ARES Net.
NOTE: SPECIAL FREQUENCIES AND PROCEDURES
FOR THIS MONTH ONLY!
This month, we have a special opportunity to
practice our skills in establishing flexible
communications networks when our usual
infrastructure is unavailable. The SARA 2 meter
repeater is out of service. Accordingly, we will
use two frequencies to conduct tonight's net:
146.88 MHz SIMPLEX; and
the SARA 70 cm repeater (444.375 MHz, +5.0 MHz
offset, 114.8 Hz PL).
The net control station will be located in the
northwest suburbs. We will need relay help from
stations with good antenna setups on 2 meters.
For those planning to participate on 70 cm, please
note that the coverage of the SARA 70 cm repeater
is not as wide as the 2 meter machine, so you may
need more power or a directional antenna to reach
the repeater if you are far from its location on
the north side of Chicago.
In addition, due to our unusual repeater
situation, you may also check in to the net via
APRS by sending a brief message to N9NL-9 from
about 8:15 to 8:50 PM.
Finally, those who try to check in via voice or
APRS, but are unsuccessful, may "check in" by
sending a brief e-mail to N9NL at ARRL.NET. Please
indicate what stations you were able to hear.
I'd like to thank the members of SARA for letting
us use their repeater over the last couple of
years, and I look forward to the return of their 2
meter signal. When a repeater works as well as
theirs has, it's easy to take for granted the
resources and effort required to make that happen.
I hope to "see" you all on the net tonight.
