Hi Dave,

Bruce is a good tech listen to him. My own experience i had happen with
the IC-706MK II previous radio to the MK II G was running mobile, had
the engine off and was getting some complaints of distortion. I started
the vehicle and the distortion cleared. Maybe along with what Bruce
suggested you should check to see if your power supply connections are
tight up to and including installing new connections and soldering them
after crimping. Had a VHF Transceiver that was having low power issues
and the connections though tighter that finger tight, were still the
problem as the trouble cleared when i tightened up the bonding posts
using tools. So I changed out the connectors, crimped them on well,
soldered the connectors and on my power supply it take a 7/16" wrench to
tighten the binding posts and i made sure they were reasonable tight
being careful not to snap off the binding posts.
