Not sure what you are running as an operating system on your laptop. I
am running XP here on my tower and laptop systems. I have simple 8 - 10
dollar USB to serial converters to work fine. CT-17 has a specific
protocol that it needs which includes the address. You can use programs
such as CHIRP, HRD, and an ICOM specific called Commander. They all work
for me on my IC2100, IC2200 and IC-910.
I doubt if Hyperterminal will work since the it assumes plain text.
Also, if you are using XP on a laptop, a different com port will come up
for each different USB port that you use. Be sure you check the
"Devices" under control panel and find out which com port became active.
I would at least loop the USB adapter (Serial side pin 2 to 3) and make
sure it echos what you type. At least you'll know that your
communications are working to that point.
Hope that this helps.
