Hi Dwayne,

You are perfectly right about the Drive control. It should be the first 
thing to check. Too high Drive may cause distortions in SSB, as well as 
produce artefacts on CW.

IC-775 may produce a momentary but serious power spike at a start of 
transmission. Therefore it may cause problems to tube amps. However, the 
"native" solid state Icom's IC-PW1 handles this spike easily. I run such a 
combo since end 1990-ies with no problem. Not sure about other solid state 
PAs due to lack of experience, but it should not be a problem for them, as 
well.
