[ICOM] UPS and a 7800

The problems with radios like my IC7700 is that it is heavier than it
looks and it is unbalanced. Fortunately, not only is it double-boxed,
but the boxes are separated with heavy Styrofoam. I am sure if dropped
from the right height on the wrong surface it could be damaged, but it
would have to be a major effort.
The only problem I have had with UPS was when shipping an amp
cross-country from the east coast distributor. The manufacturer
double-boxed it, but the outer box looked like it was designed to absorb
impact by disintegrating! There was sufficient space between the outer
and inner boxes to keep any sharp objects away from the amp, but the
outer box was sufficiently torn up that I just broke it down and threw
it away. It was not worth saving. But it had died doing its job--the
inner box was untouched.
I think if I ever had to ship my 7700 overseas I would bolt it to a
board and encapsulate it in at least ten inches of high-pressure applied
Styrofoam and then double-box *that*! Then, of course, there are
heavy-duty Pelican cases that would be suitable for multiple trips and
the list goes on and on. Thankfully, I don't have to do that a lot.... :)
