[ICOM] ProIII and TX5C

Hmmm, I find those comments intriguing. This is why. I was a SSB
operator on the Clipperton 2000 DXpedition which used 756 Pros. At the
time I knew very little about 'setting' them up, but studied a bit on
the boat ride down. I don't recall having a problem with the AGC
'hanging up'. One evening on 75 phone I was banging off around 5
stateside contacts a minute and maybe more when it was sixes only. I
was listening only on one announced frequency. Are the PROIII s that
much worse than the PRO or is there another problem?

Boy, it is really amazing to see how badly the ProIII's are working on
SSB at TX5C. You can see great--top of the world--performance by the CW
guys, while the poor SSB guys are sitting around waiting for the AGC to
come down to the point where they can hear at least a 20-over signal.
CW rates are three to four times the SSB ones or more, because the SSB
ops are twiddling their thumbs. I thought this had been shown in any
number of previous DXpeditions, but I suppose if you are offered free
radios, you take 'em even if they can't do the job. Doesn't ANYONE know
what a roofing filter is and why it matters? They would have been
better off with 765's.
