Look at HTs.  I was first licensed in 1980, and the
Icom 2AT came out shortly after that.  It did 1.5
watts, the tone board was optional, no memories, no
scanning, and thumbwheels to change the frequency.  If
you wanted the TTP for autopatch use, the total price
was $260.  I can buy a 5 watt HT with tones, DCS,
scanning, more memories than I can ever use, and a
much smaller physical size for less than 1/2 of that
price.
