The inflation index does not apply to consumer electronics. This is probably the only industry where prices come down while features increase. In 1995 I bought an IBM computer for about $1,400 ...it came with Windows 95, an 80 meg drive and 540 memory. Last month I replaced it for $500 and got Windows XP (turned down Vista), 225 gig drive and one gig memory. Look at flat screen TVs ...there price drops are even more severe.
Granted, the Ham market is limited, and without mass production, but the most of the components are common with thoses used in computers and other electronic products and those prices have dropped dramatically. I would quess that the 245 would cost less than $2,000, including inflation, if made today.

Actually $2990 in 1995 is equal to $3922.17 in 2006 dollars. This is
according to the calculator at http://www.westegg.com/inflation/. So the
7700 is approximately 50% more than the 245 in adjusted dollars.
