[ICOM] Pro series, portabilty, and more (was: re: info needed please)

Renee,

The PRO is a good radio but the II is noticeably better. I have a PRO and
wish I had a II or a III.

The PRO is a good choice if you have a good local tech who can swap out the
8-volt regulators and resolve its most serious design issue (the NB pumps
the 8-volt rail due to poor regulation and it makes nearby stations
annoyingly noticeable even when they're out of the passband). My guy, an
authorized ICOM tech, expects it to cost $55 or so Canadian. Still quite a
bit less than the jump to a II, however. There is a quick fix too, but I'm
going with the change that even ICOM recommends.

The II and III also have more elegant control functions, but I wouldn't call
them make-or-break.
