[ICOM] Icom 718 (or other used Icom) question

 Hello John

I own both the IC718 and the FT897 (same RX as the FT857).

As much as I like my 718 (and I truly have enjoyed it as a basic
easy-to-use radio), I have to say that the receiver on the FT857/897 is a
vast improvement over the 718. The DSP is better implemented in the FT's.
I find the sensivitiy on the radios generally comparable, but the
selectivity is generally better on the Yaesu models. I do, however, as a
man in my 60's, appreciate the much larger display on the IC718.

If it is your intention to acquire a "base HF radio" I think you would be
better served by the IC-746 (initial model, non-pro) on the used market.
The 746 can be found for between $650 and $750, and I believe you will be
much happier with it than you would be with the IC718. Additionally, the
IC746 would give you 100W on both 6 & 2 meters, so you could leave your
FT857 on 432MHz for satellite downlink.

Good Luck, Bob WA2EMF, Rock Hill, SC
