Cannot compare it to the FT857D as I do not/did not own one.
However, I'm on my 3rd 718...at different times I sold the first two and regretted it. I use the 718 as an "inexpensive" portable and vacation rig. It also sits beside my Icom 7800 and 756 Pro II, and I generally use the 718 on week nights when I just want to listen around for a few minutes or have one or two QSOs and don't want to power up the 7800/Pro II for brief periods.
With any rig in its price class it has a couple of shortcomings like fixed AGC and a single filter slot. But for the price, reliability, and convenience it can't be beat. By the way, I installed an INRAD #116 400Hz CW filter that works wonders on CW and digital modes.
