==========
A friend of mine had a low S/N 775 and it had two major problems:
1) When operating split, the receive VFO put out a weak signal on the
receive frequency (i.e., the DX station's frequency). Needless to say
other stations trying to work the DX station did not appreciate this.
2) When used on CW to drive a linear amp, there was beaucoup overshoot on
the first dit or dah sent, resulting in a brief overdrive condition to
the amp, causing the amp to fault.
The owner complained to Icom about the problems (which all early S/Ns
have) and they exchanged it for a newer (higher S/N) 775, even though his
original 775 was several years old (apparently they did this because they
knew their early S/N product violated FCC regs). This cured the
problems.
I have no idea of what the S/N is where a bad 775 became a good one.
