"Mac" Taneguchi of the TET (Taneguchi Engineering
Traders) set up an operation in Norman, OK just 25
miles south of Oklahoma City. I knew him personally
as I put in a few bucks to help him get started in
the USA. I was visiting with him at another ham's
station and witnessed his operating technique. It
seems that it may be SOP for the Japanese. He sat
some 2 feet back from the mic and spoke quite
softly. I suspect that is why so many (not just Icom)
mobile rigs have such high mic sensitivity. Additionally,
the maximum highway speed in Japan was 110 kph
at one time, even on expressways. Japanese cars
had been much quieter than American iron for MANY
years. Add lower speeds, quieter car interiors, and
Japanese speaking habits and I believe we can see
why so many rigs from that country have such hot
audio.
Yes, maybe they should have been modified prior
to shipment to the US with our noisy pickups, etc.,
but I have always found Icom to be extremely helpful
with its customers. Definitely not the case with Y & K.
That's why I have used Icom exclusively (over 40 rigs
total) since 1972.

Yes ok Mac BUT my point here is that Icom should NOT have shipped those
radios without doing the modifications themselves! In my book that is
very poor quality control on Icom's part.
