[ICOM] Best antenna for 706 mobile?

Good thinking Jim.
The LDG will outperform the AH-4 unless more than 100 watts is desperately
needed.
Hustlers, Ham Stick etc. will all outperform the AH-4 system. Not as
convenient but long term experience tells me that needing to work all bands
will play out soon and most settle on one band. Then put in a system suited
for that band and enjoy.
If you can stand some guying, a two foot section added to the bottom of a
Ham Stick will allow one to cover the entire 20M band and work CW and SSB
with full output. That has been my experience for several years.
A complete set of Hustlers is less expensive than any decent screwdriver and
are more efficient even using the standard mast. An extended mast is even
better and gets your efficiency much higher than a screwdriver.
Any short mast, at or near base loaded, is a compromise when compared to
center or top loaded.
Good luck to all mobile ops. They tend to be a special breed with lots of
patience and ultimately better informed in what makes or breaks a mobile
system.
73, George
P.S. Mobile operation is very near to QRP. Enjoy it.
