I had the same problem with mine a couple of years ago. C131 a .1 uF
coupling capacitor in the R.F. A unit shorted, which created a feed back
loop that kept the receiver enabled during tranmit and put the tranmitter
into full power output (the loop is after the ALC circuit) and my Astron
RS-35 went into current limiting and shut down. The exact symptoms you are
having.
As I recall the capacitor and the PIN diodes are easily accessible on the
back side of the circuit board.
The shorted capacitor also took took out a couple of PIN diodes before I
found a fixed the problem.
