[ICOM] pw-1 question

Just got a pw-1 and love it but I have one question. The manual is very vague about how to properly activate and tune the auto tuner. It says to push the tuner button for 2 seconds and the tuner will  start automatically. Well this isn't quiet the whole story. It needs a little RF to get going! Is the manual that defficent or am I missing something? I've been switching to cw mode, pushing the tuner button for 2 seconds and keying the rig until the swr dips to 1. Any suggestions?
