Some cars use a tubular type lamp which might work for you. They may draw 
too much current but it's something to look into.

Also, during your next foray into the rig to replace the bulbs, you might 
want to consider placing diode(s) in series with them to slightly reduce 
the voltage to them. This might prolong the life of the bulbs.
