Hi, Group.  It sounds like just maybe you got a 'returned' unit that was
modded for MARS action!  There's a simple one-diode removal procedure to
open up the vfo as you describe.  I'm not sure how the band-edge beep plays
into this, but the MARS mod on a 'returned' unit sounds like a possibility.
How well do you know your dealer??  Vic
