Colin,
Approximately 15 years ago I got involved the Icom 700 marine radio
while cruising in California and Baja California. I do not think it was the
PRO version. The frequencies are set by internal Phase Lock Loop
which will be difficult to modify for ham bands.
In contrast, it is much easier to convert some older ham radios for
use on the marine band. Here in the US, a modified ham radio is illegal
to use on marine band unless it is emergency. At the time, I modified
a Kenwood TS 430, 440 and TS 940 for marine use.
Before you go an buy a ham radio, go to www.qrz.com and check for
modifications. Your best bet will be with older radios with 'through hole'
components. Newer radios with surface mount components are much
harder to work on without special tools.
Enjoy cruising.
Good luck,
73,

Mort, KB6BSN

on amateur bands? If so, how could I go about it. Apologies, being a
complete novice in this area, but if I can use this rig it would be great as
it is already installed on the boat.
