I have not used the 706 or any variation, but I recently use an FT-817,
which is very similar to the 857. I really enjoyed the rig, but it had
some definite faults to me. The display was small so I had to enlarge
the frequency, which hid other information I needed. There were too
many buttons with too many tasks. If this were a mobile rig, I would
not have enjoyed it at all. Changing frequencies and menu settings were
too difficult to do while driving, especially with the small display. I
have played with the display model at HRO of the IC-706. I don't
remember how easy it will be to use mobile but I know what to look for
when I look at it again.
I agree with Sasi. It depends on you, your operating practices, your
preferences and your ability to learn and maneuver thru the menus easily
enough. The 857 might be easier to work through, I don't know. I am
looking for an IC-706Mk2G for myself.
I hear that the Yaesu is better for setting up repeaters than the 706,
but for the prices I see on eBay, I would just assume have a separate
rig in the car and house for repeater operations regardless of HF radio
brand or features.
YMMV
Good Luck,
