You might want to send your question [about low output of an HC-5 into an 
IC706] to Bob Heil at Heil Audio.  I had a similar problem with my IC-735/HC-5 
and Bob suggested changing 1 resistor in the radio.  Improvement was instant and 
significant.  I was able to run mike gain at a midrange level and had pleanty 
of audio and RF output.  The change did not prevent me from using the ICOM 
hand mike.
