Hans, I personally have received fine audio reports on the HMi, Heil
Goldline/HC-5 and the current ProLine (no ptt button....different mic cord
than HMi or GL).
A very small amount of compression (est. less than 2-3 db) is used with the
GL and Proline. Using the HMi I typically used no compression of course the
eq is set on the ProII typically -2 base on the Hmi, -3 base on the GL or
Proline and +3 to +5 on the Treble. (With the Proline mine is set to -3 base
and +5 treble Wide position with compression............Mid works fine also)
I am currently using the Proline, keying with a foot switch on a ProII and
the Heil Studio One on an Orion. I have even used the Studio One on the
ProII and notice the characteristics are just like the GL or ProLine.
Now back to compression. I have never liked compressors. They can be easily
mis-used and can give a Ham the background noise like Jet planes landing
and the sad thing some Hams will tell him he sounds fine. I find I don't
have enough gain on the Dynamic mic's, the Goldline or ProLine without using
some compression. It is ever so slight and so little I feel it acts more
like a gain control than a compressor and note reports indicate it does not
sound like I am running any compression (good).
I have always been very concerned about breath blast noise and always use a
large foam cover over the head of all my mics and this is probably the
reason I need a little more gain on the Dynamics although I could probably
get by without compression and set the mic gain wide open. Now with the HMi
gain is sufficient and no compression is needed.
Hans, concerning the SM-20 or even the SM-8 I have used both but prefer the
Heils. Both can be made to sound ok (no compression needed) using the EQ
settings on the rigs.
Bet I have you confused now.

I am a rag chewing operator and use a 756ProII and 7400. Both SSB and FM.
Thanks in advance!
