Jim,
I did this years ago, albeit with an Icom 761 and Kenwood TS-850.
Ladder line to a 4:1 current balun placed outside the shack, then a
very short piece of low loss coax (9913) from balun to rig. The
internal tuners were quite forgiving for that particular configuration
of antenna, ladder line and coax. Worked quite well. May not be the
case for other installations.
