Yes, I have a comment. Just like there are many different models of
cars, there are many different models of radios. What someone else may
like, you may not. In my case, I went to HRO in New Hampshire and did a
side by side comparison on the air of the radios I had narrowed my
selection down to, that they had in stock and hooked up for demo. I
tried the IC-746Pro, IC-756ProII, FT1000MP-MkV, TS-2000 and TS-870S.
Another fellow was there at the same time as I doing the same thing. He
walked out with the TS-2000 and I walked out with an IC-756ProII. So we
both operated and listened to the same radios and came to different
conclusions as to which one suited our purpose. Yes, I only spent a
couple hours there trying things out, not several days. But it was
enough time to tell me that they were all pretty good radios and there
wasn't one of them that I would not like. I'm sure some will say they
can tell a SIGNIFICANT difference between the radios but I sure can't.
What I look for from internet reports is significant QUALITY problems
people have had. How the radios actually perform is pretty subjective
since each persons opinion can be quite different from another persons
ideas of how it performs. But when quality problems rear their head,
that is not an opinion, that is fact.
So take other peoples performance opinions with a large grain of salt
but listen up when people complain about actual failures and how the
company treats quality problems.
And if at all possible, go to a ham store somewhere who has the
equipment you want set up in a demo mode and play for an hour or two, or
try to visit a local ham who has a piece of gear you're interested in.
This is a big expensive step to take without at least trying the radios
for yourself. Trying one out is worth many hours of surfing the internet
looking for opinions.
