Tom, FWIW, the 746 and the 746PRO are totally different radios. The
746 is the old crystal filter implementation while the 746PRO is built
around a 36 KHz DSP core transceiver that performs all signal
operations of filtering, modulation, demodulation, keying, etc.
The 746PRO uses similar DSP chips, etc. as the 756PRO and PRO2 but
there are substantial differences between them. But, it is not
surprising that your 746PRO sounds so good. That was the first thing I
noticed when I got my 756PRO back in 2000. I have since added a PRO2
and it is even better in several respects.
You have a great radio, plus 2 meters all-mode, and IF DSP
architecture. Enjoy!
