[Icom] IC 756 Pro II vs FT1000MP MKV

Hi Bill,

Yes, indeed, no product is totally bug-free. In my 18 years of Icom radio
ownership, I have encountered 6 warranty issues:

1. an H16 with a faulty PA module
2. an IC-725 with a leaky TX driver transistor
3. an IC-729 with an improperly crimped internal connector pin, causing the
squelch control to malfunction
4. a V100 with a dud power-up relay
5. an IC-756Pro in which the Dual Watch pot went open after a few months
6. A U16 with an intermittent VCO (radio exchanged by dealer)

In all these cases, Icom performed the repairs expeditiously, and the radios
never failed again. I still have the H16, U16 and V100.

The MkV situation is a different story, though - it is an ongoing refrain,
which peaks to a crescendo every few weeks on the 1000mp reflector. Compared
to this, one sees very few QA-related complaints about the IC-756Pro,
756Pro2 or 746Pro.

Cheers for now, 73, Happy New Year,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Adam,

I hear you, but they all have problems. I went to a local dealer some weeks
(months!!) back to actually look at and get either the IC-756PRO II or the
IC-746PRO. I really kind of wanted the 100 watts on two meters, but liked
the
advertised extra features in the '756. So, when ready to actually make the
purchase, I decided to have them remove the "my" IC-756PRO II from the box
and fire it up. It immediately started some sort of boot process and then
quickly died. Deciding that it was fate, I looked more closely at the
IC-746PRO -- again with that desired two meter coverage. Well, the tuning
knob was so physically loose it appeared like a radio that had years of use
on it. Obviously, some sort of assembly process problem -- or early on
design
flaw. So, in the end, I just bought a remaining stock new, original IC-746.
Nice radio, bugs worked out, and it works fine after all these weeks. Lesson
-- nobody has an edge on quality from my experience. I also have an original
FT-1000MP -- bought new from the last month of their production -- with no
problems. So, who can tell? I think you roll the dice on them all.
