Charlie: Easy enough to tell if a beam is under where you intend to
drill--just press on roof lightly and it should give where there is no beam.
If you press around, you should be able to locate the beams. This won't tell
you where any wiring is, however. For that you will need to look between
headliner and roof. If you have a sunroof or a padded roof, this beam
locating technique will not work, but I would reconsider a rear fender or
trunk lid in that case. The real problem with the beams is if the headliner
is attached to them, it can be very difficult to route the cable to the
radio. Since Cadillacs do not usually have a dome light which can be removed
to see what is going on between the headliner and roof, I recommend removing
door molding so you can pry the headliner down a bit. Also, if your Deville
has vanity mirrors for rear seat passengers, that may be another way to get
between roof and headliner. I have a 1990 Fleetwood, and I picked off power
from the accessory relay panel under passenger side of the dash with no
noise or regulation problems. Antenna on rear fender. My radio is also an
ICOM IC-207H. GM has a phamphlet on radio interaction with automotive
electronics. No real answers there, just precautions to take. Mounting
antenna on the roof is best place to minimize any interactions. The only
problem I have with the Fleetwood is sometimes the RF from the radio gets
into the rear speaker amp in the BOSE sound system. The only interaction (my
experience is somewhat limited) I have had with late models was that my 25
watt 10 meter SSB radio with trunk mounted mag mount on the trunk of a 2002
Lincoln or a 2001 Taurus, the SSB modulated the dash lighting! I think rear
defroster brought RF to the dash as the interaction was not as bad when
defrosters were turned on. These were rentals, so I never investigated any
deeper. 10 Meters caused no problems in the 1990 Fleetwood. I know this is
not exactly what you asked, but hope it helps. Good Luck--Mike, WV2ZOW

Subject: [Icom] RE. MOBIL XCEIVER INSTALATION.
Greetings Icom users,
I am seeking information on the installation of an IC207H dual band
transceiver and
a roof mnt [with hole] antenna. The car is a 1998 Cadillac Sedan Deville. I
have been told that this model and year car has a beam in the roof that may
cause problems.
I would like to verify this since the source of this information isn't GM.
Another concern is the effect of uhf and vhf on the auto electronics.
Any information, web address or other forms would be greatly appreciated.
Tnx & 73
Charlie
