[HomeBrew] 6L6 coil power/heat limitations?

Greetings,
I'm familiar with the AES coil forms. The quality of these forms is none
too good. After a couple of insertions into the coil socket it's not
unusual for the form to separate at the base. I plan on contacting them
about it. They do want to know about any problems with any of the
products they sell and will do something about it.

Yes, coil forms and many other things that homebrewers need are not all
that available anymore. Think about it. How many people out there need
coil forms. Not too many so it's really not economically sound for a
company to tool up for even a short production run. And if they did we'd
be screaming about the price. I've had pretty good results making forms
out of PVC tubing.

If your coils are heating up you definately have a problem with your
design, high SWR, material selection or way too small a wire size. They
should not be heating up.
For a 6L6 I wouldn't use anything smaller than #20, preferably #16 wire.
Also I wouldn't be using a coil form, but a space wound coil. These can
be mounted on a plastic strip and made "plug-in-able" with banana jacks.

See if you can get your hands on a 1930's or 40's ARRL Handbook.

Regards,
Helm. WB2ADT
