John,
I have an LG-1 which is the exact same unit with a different case. It 
was built in the 50's and the guy put an extra knob on the front. 
Until I restored it I had no idea what it was. The knob was attached 
to a 7-60 pfd (as measured on my LCR meter) air dielectric variable 
capacitor in parallel to the front of the tuning capacitor. It causes 
no adverse conditions and is amazingly effective at providing fine 
tuning. Try it if  you don't mind drilling a hole just above the fine 
attenuator.
