Until I retired I designed, built and installed air cargo handling systems 
for most of the world's major shipping companies (however I never did USPS or 
DHL).
I've never had a project in any hub where there was a labor problem so I 
can't comment on them, but by and large, the folks working at these hubs try to 
treat the packages like they were their own.
Just watching the volume and speed of a sort at a big hub makes one wonder 
how anything ever gets to where its going, let alone in good condition.
Heavy stuff that isn't clearly marked "HEAVY" or even better yet "CAUTION - 
HEAVY" seems (to me) to get dropped and mistreated quite a bit. Just human 
nature, I guess. Give 'em a break and let them know what they're dealing with 
BEFORE someone tries to pick it up. These guys, and gals, are in a situation where 
speed is important, very important. Grabbing a relatively small box that 
weighs 100+ pounds without warning is a back injury waiting to happen.

If you're having a lot of trouble with UPS, I'd suggest a "friendly" letter 
to the HQ in Louisville.
I've worked with a lot of their upper management and they really want to get 
your stuff to you on time and in good condition, and spend a lot of money 
trying to meet that goal. They may not be aware that "everything" going through a 
certain hub is getting damaged.
FED-X, by the way, has the same philosophy, from what I've observed. --
