Yes, it won't work in the AM position if there is no filter installed.
You would have to copy AM in the USB or LSB positions and zero beat the
carrier. AS I recall, the AM filter sold by Heath was 3.75 KHz. 

I wonder of it would be possible to homebrew an LC filter? At that I.F.,
an LC filter would be pretty broad, though.
