[HCARC] Set UP Rule

I suggest we get together with all that care to have an input on Thursday
evening at 6pm (0000 utc) and at a minimum decide on what antennas we are
going to put up and get as many things like shooting ropes, etc done in
advance so we can easily get set up on Friday early in the day, with any
other set up done on Friday evening when the sun is down - of course not to
exceed 24 hours total. That way we won't be in a panic working in the heat
if for some reason we find out that we need another PL-259 barrel connector,
or more tape or whatever that throws the assembly into chaos. NOTHING is
worse than standing around with hands in pockets waiting for someone to run
home or to Home Depot. Since we are going to probably be using a good bit
of my LMR-400 coax, I will bring all of my PL-259's so we don't have to
remove them from the coax and I won't need to pay others for one of their
fittings put on one of my cables. I have about 15 or 16 of them, but will
be removing some of the non-Amphenol to be replaced with N connectors for
connecting into the Alpha Delta lightning arresters I have coming (don't ask
why I didn't get Alpha Delta's with UHF connectors - it was price of
course - N connectored Alpha Deltas for $8.00 each vs $49.00 each for UHF
ones). I don't have any barrel connectors for connecting 2 pieces of Coax
together. As I told Jeff, I don't mind taking the new coax off of the
spool, but when cut it will need to be in lengths either as long as I need
them or in lengths significantly longer than I need. That means we will
probably be in need of some short(er) pieces of Coax for use around the
stations and of course if anyone has already made up coax runs, that just
makes it easier to use than cutting and building new cables.. Having paced
off the distances to things at OLH the lengths I need shouldn't be much of a
problem.
IF the club is happy with the cable I have, we as a club should seriously
look into purchasing a 1000 foot spool for things like Field Day. Including
shipping and getting a discount for being a Disabled Vet, Shireen sent me
the 1000 foot spool for 44.5 cents per linear foot and that is for Direct
Burial RFC-400 that is guaranteed by the manufacturer (made in Maryland) to
be equal or better than the Times cable. I figured that if the cable turned
out to be only 90% as good as they say it is, it still has better specs than
RG8 for less than half the price (one has to save a dollar or two
somewhere). If it turns out to be crappy cable I can return it for a full
refund - hard to lose there.
Jeff, I paced off the distance from the peak of the end of the pavilion to
the goal posts where Bill Tynan wants to put up his push up mast and it is
approx 75 feet. It's approx 180 feet from the same place on the pavilion to
the right football field light standard and about 160 to the left one
(closest to HWY 27). A standard football field is 160 feet wide and the
light standards are approx 20 feet off of each sideline or approx 200 feet
between them. I have one of the distance measures you roll along the ground
for measuring distances if we need it. I also have access to a bunch of the
orange heavy twine that is used to tie up large 21 bale hay packets that I
can get for free for doing any miscellaneous lashing jobs. I can get it
from Tommy Lackey at Lackey Feed and Hay in Center Point. I'll ask him
tomorrow to start saving it for us. It will have knots about every 20 feet,
but nothing that can't be worked around. It's about 3/16 inch diameter cord
which can be used as very visible antenna guy's since it is bright orange.
I also have 24 four foot sections of fiberglass military surplus antenna
mast we can use, including a number of the rings that fit between sections
of the mast for attaching guy's, a galvanized meal antenna tripod, and about
four or five 30 foot sections of 2 inch steel pipe. With the appropriate
couple of large pipe wrenches (I don't have them) we can have a 60 foot tall
mast by attaching a couple of lengths together - several have couplers on
the end of them. Last, I have a 20 foot section of antenna tower that is
about 6 inches on a side that has a place to mount a mast on one end that
can be used as an antenna support. It will eventually become my mast for a
2 meter beam antenna, but it is not up yet and still available.
Is there any use for steel baling wire that I take off of all my hay bales
when I feed?? Each wire is about 8 feet long depending on where I have cut
the bale. If there is a use, I will be sure to cut them near the wire knot
so they will be a long as possible.
Last, the RigExpert AA-200 antenna analyzer my brother sent to me (free is
so very nice) was checked out Friday by Dale Gaudier K4DG and it matches the
output from his. It is available for checking out antennas and feedlines.
It can be set to check out 5 separate frequencies on an antenna at one time.
If you have an antenna to check out from 1 mhz to 200 mhz let me know - I
can help.
