Brian,

Basically (distilling this down), the PD enables CW and SSB reception 
WITHOUT clamping down the AVC/AGC function, like usually occurs with turning 
the audio gain UP and using the RF gain as the volume control.  Best demo I 
ever saw was on the Drake 2B (that I love and have).. the difference between 
modes is VERY OBVIOUS.
