HW-16 uses the same idea.
Note that with such an arrangement the dial turns in the opposite direction
of the knob. I find that to be very annoying! YMMV.

True. But the all-gear drives in the ARC-5s and LM/BC-221s are tough to beat.
Once you use one of those that's been set up properly, you'll be spoiled.
