Most manufacturers had different shades of paint used on cabinets, panels, etc. Even Collins had, on the "A" Line, subtle differences in the paint.
Also, depending on where the unit was stored, displayed, etc., the paint can "age" over time and be significantly different from what it was originally. Look for somewhere on the panel where it has been contact with, like the chassis, since the beginning. Compare that to what is now appearing on the front. In most cases, there is a significantly different appearance.

I have an HQ-129-X with a dark gray front panel finish.
It appears to be considerably darker than the finish shown
in various illustrations or in photos on the web. Its
possible its a replacement but the lettering appears to be
original. All the stenciling on the front is in white. I
wonder if the panel is original; did Hammarlund make panels
in different shades of gray?
