sp-600 is pretty easy to a basic alignment on, i.e. peaking the the coils/caps.
I say basic, because I use a sweep gen/spectrum analyzer to finalize the IF filter alignments.
(Only because they are handy)
The insulated tools for the RF deck are a great idea. Especially the trim caps.
Tube extenders can be useful for debugging the RF deck.
The IF deck is aligned before the RF deck and is a good sanity check of initial receiver behavior.
Been a while since I worked on my sp-600's, but one way I injected the IF signal into the mixer tube
was to wrap a number of coils around the mixer tube and connect one end of the coil to the sig gen.
You need a lot more amplitude from the sig gen.
btw: starting from the audio section and working backwards is a good way to check initial Rx behavior as well
As for the RF deck. Unless you put the deck components in the wrong way, it is highly unlikely
that the bands are out of order.
It is possible that the cam that raises/lowers the band indicator is miss aligned.
I would suggest extending the mixer or vfo tube and checking the vfo frequency.
Alternatively, put a SWL receiver nearby and loosely couple it to the mixer/vfo tube (loose wire).
Tune the SWL to the anticipated VFO frequency and tune the sp-600 around to see if you can pick it up.
If you can't, change bands and try again.
Do insure that the switch at the rear/bottom of the RF deck is not broken. It switches in/out an LO signal for high
bands (if I recall correctly).
I love these Receivers!! Good luck with it.
