What do you mean when you say "I hear AM radio but it is in
the wrong band"?

I also don't understand what you mean. Is it a regular
medium wave broadcast station or a short wave broadcaster?
Which band do you hear it on? Can you tune it, I mean what
happens when you change the main tuning?
FWIW, the SP-600 is a quite easy receiver to align
despite its seeming complexity. Its helpful to have an
insulated adjusting tool with a blade at one end and a
socket with a blade at the other end. The socket side is for
adjusting the coils. It will slip over the shafts and not
slip off. Before going into the alignment lets make sure
its working right.
The SP-600 is a very good receiver which has a bad
reputation among some because a lot of them work but are
sick.
